Upgrades - December 5, 2007
I've installed a small, lightweight CAPTCHA system on our sites that accept comments (more info on the system). Comment spam was a real problem and while readers never saw the junk comments (we moderate all our comments) it was fucking up the database and slowing everything down.
The problem is that I'm falling asleep at my desk and no matter how much coffee I pour into my face, it's not helping. All it's doing is making me sweat like a whore in a confessional as I struggle to stay awake. Let me tell you how awesome it is.
What you all can do is go leave a comment for your favorite Rudius author and make sure that in my fog I didn't fuck anything up. They'll appreciate the love. If I did break the comment system, or you find anything else that's acting strange, please contact me and let me know.

This seems like a proper time to comment on your blog for the first time, and mention that this is a great blog. Keep it up.

Everyone knows you don't have a desk.

I'm not sure how much control you have over this new system, but it has a truly irritating UI "feature". I left a long response for Ryan Holiday the other day and didn't notice the new CAPTCHA request. The issue being that my insightful comment was lost forever (allowing me to proclaim its True Genius). Upon hitting the back button in the browser, my comment was gone when I returned to the previous screen. Potentially, you could fix this by either giving the comment box a memory of what was typed upon Back, the "Please fill in the CAPTCHA Box" error message could include the comment with instructions to copy, back, and paste, or the CAPTCHA error could show up in a pop up window or the current page so as not to redirect from the page with your comment.
I'm not sure if you have the control to be able to do it, but it's a pretty irritating design for real users who miss the box. And it's pretty easy to miss given that it doesn't look like the typical "re-type this squiggly text" instance.

Ryan - My desk in that I happened to be sitting at it. Possession is 9/10s.
Tim - I'll look into that because the comment boxes have 'memory' for me. When testing this system, I could submit a comment without the response, hit back and it was still there. I'll see if I can add the comment box to the warning page, although I'm not a coder, so we'll see how that goes.

I don't have a typekey accont. That may be causing the different behavior?

I justed tested again, and my comment was still there. That's not what happened when I tested earlier or when I posted on Ryan's site. Weird.

I don't have a typekey account either but as long as the comments are staying in the box, I'm not going to worry too much about it.
